The income tax return is filed every year so as to give complete detail of income earned in the previous year.
Previous year means year previous to the year in which you need to file the return. For Example: At present, the previous year is 2018-19, which is from 1st April 2018 to 31st March 2019. For this previous year, the Income tax return will be filed until 31st July 2019.
The year in which return is filed is called Assessment year. For the previous year 2018-19, the assessment year will be 2019-20.
Filling of Income Tax return
People find filing of the Income tax return very tedious job. But it is actually an easy task for anyone. The only thing you need to know is what are the requirements for it. You should also know the software or utilities provided by Income tax departments to fill the data.
In this post, we will learn how to fill the Income tax return Form in the offline utility which we can download from the Income tax department website.
Step 1: Download Offline Utility of Income tax return form
Firstly visit the site of the Income tax department: https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/home
Then check out its Offline Utilities section shown in the right-hand side of the page (Given in image below).
Then in the offline utilities section, click on the Income tax return preparation utilities. You will see many offline Income tax forms.
We will learn this procedure in ITR-1.So click on the Java utility link of ITR-1 as given in the image below to download. It will be downloaded in the Zip folder. Extract it when it gets finished downloading. Now in the extracted folder of ITR-1, click on the Java application of ITR-1 as shown in the image below.
Step 2: Open Offline Utility of ITR-1
In this application, you will see various tabs in the second row. By clicking on each tab, fill the required blanks.
The first tab is of Instructions for filling the form.
Step 3: Fill General Information
The second tab is of General information where you have to fill information like PAN No., name, Aadhaar number, etc.
In the last column, there is one optional blank for stating whether this return is filed in case of rectification or revision. If yes, then state acknowledgement number and date of filing original return. Along with it, state the notice number if received in case of defective return. Leave this column blank if you are filing the original return.
Step 4: Computation of Gross Total Income
In the third tab, enter details of income for calculating Gross Total Income (PART B). For ITR-1, enter details of salary, House property and Income from other sources. Remember that if any loss is to be carried off or set off, then use ITR-2.
Then details of deductions (PART C) are to be entered. Read every section and enter values accordingly.
Lastly in this tab, on the basis of details entered, the tax is computed along with interest and fees payable and rebate adjusted.
Step 5: Fill details of TDS and TCS
In the fourth tab, you need to enter the details of Tax deducted at source(TDS) on salary (FORM 16) and other than salary (FORM 16A and 26QC). This also includes Tax collected at source(TCS) and advance tax and self-assessment tax payments.
Step 6: Total tax paid or refund
In the fifth tab, the total tax which is to be paid or refunded is automatically calculated on the basis of details entered in previous tabs. Along with this, any exempt income is to be entered in this tab, as given in the image below.
After this, the bank account detail is also required to be entered so that refund amount, if any, can be credited after the return is processed.
In the end, there is the verification section where you have to enter general details.
Step 7: Don’t miss to fill donation for deduction!
In the last tab, any donations under section 80G which are entitled to deduction are entered. For this, you should know the list of various organizations or funds in which you can donate and determine the qualifying limit, as shown in the image below.
Submission of Return prepared
Income tax return prepared can be submitted in two ways: One is through Offline utility only and other is by logging in Income tax account.
In online utility, return can be submitted by clicking on SUBMIT button in top row. A XML file will be created if there are no error and by entering your password of income tax account and return will be submitted. In case of error, first solve it by checking in Validation error section.
If you want to file return online, then first save this computation in XML file by clicking on SAVE button. Then log in Income tax account by entering PAN number and password. Then click on Submit returns button. Follow the requirements like Form type, assessment year, etc.
In this way, you can prepare and file your Income tax return yourself!
